Compared to Japanese, the Chinese way of styling a formal upright differs, in that they make the branches very short &compact. Some important requirement for this style is that: The trunk should be perfectly straight, tapering naturally and entry from base to apex. The branches must be well balanced in all direction, with the first, second and third branches being longer & stronger, while branches at the upper portion become smaller and shorter. The lowest branches should be one-third of the total height of the tree and it should be the longest one. The plant must have good, strong root age with a gradual spread all around the base. A tapering apex must possess tiny, twiggy structure so as to form a pointed crown or a self-rounded crown. Recommended Species: Larches, Junipers, Pines & Spruces are all suitable species. Maples can also be used, but are not as easy to train into such a conformist style. Above all, fruiting or naturally informal trees are not suitable for formal upright.
