From the very beginning of the creation of human beings on earth they are used to closely associate to the forest plants. The heartiest relation among them was as old as the human civilization itself. But when people came forward for deforestation at the cost of so-called civilis74ed industrialization, they saw an endless desert without greens around them. The people realized an urge to minimize the distance they developed from the jungles with the advancement of civilization and therefore they would bring plants from there in and around the four walls of their habitat. And gradually people re-established their past close relation. They even brought the plants within the four walls of their residence by rearing the large plants in pots through adopting dwarfing techniques. That is what is called Bonsai. According to George Briggs, executive director of Arboretum- “Bonsai is a perfect marriage of art and horticulture”. Some people opined that making Bonsai is the cruelest form of art as the natural growth of plants is arrested here artificially. Surely that’s not true in the true sense or creating a new at the cost of some techniques to be followed. The Japanese spent long years in developing the dwarfing techniques for trees and perfecting this into an art. Gradually this art has spread all over the world. In India, appreciation for Bonsai is of recent origin but the practice of dwarfing the tree particularly of the medicinal plants was an age-old practice by the Ayurved practitioners. They would take frequent trimming and pruning of trees for preparing medicine and thus plants could not get any change to grow normally and as a result they become dwarfed. In this way, development of dwarf plants or Bonsai without aiming to do so has taken place in ancient India. Bonsai means a plant in shallow containers. The method of making plants dwarf is not so tough but to create an illusion of an adult and old tree in miniature is difficult. A perfect combination of scientific approach and artistic outlook can give the birth of an elegant Bonsai. The eye for line and color etc can be developed through close association with Bonsai. The complete Bonsai is based on three items, the pot, the pot media and above all the plants. The correct amalgams of these three are essential to express the mood of the creation and aesthetically satisfy the viewer. A little amount of knowledge about the style of Bonsai would be of immense help.
