Among the different arts and techniques involved in making a bonsai, the fundamental one is the forming of the style. The basic style of Bonsai depends on the character of a tree. So, creating Bonsai, out of a living plant, requires the grower to understand the science of horticulture. Generally most Bonsai have a triangular silhouette, for the simple reason that a triangular is most stable among the various shapes. A square can be toppled, a circle can roll over. The triangular shape is known to be ideal as the tree gets sunlight all over. Another aspect of Bonsai design is the visual weight or mass, which is made up of dominance, balance, and design of the pot and placement of the plant in a container. The main style of Bonsai can be classified broadly based on: A. Shape of the plant B. The style of growing C. The size of Bonsai  A Classification based on the shape of the trunk: 1. The Single Trunk Style 2. The Multiple Trunk Style 1. The Single Trunk Style: a) Formal Upright Style b) Informal Upright Style c) Slanting Style d) Cascade Style e) Semi-Cascade Style f) Windswept Style g) Weeping Style h) Wide Conical Style i) Broom Style j) Winding Trunked Style k) Literati Style 2. The Multiple Trunk Style: a) Single Tree Planting b) Double Trunked c) Multiple Trunked d) Ikada-buki e) Clasped-to-stone 1. Formal Upright Style (Chokkan in Japanese): This is the most basic style of Bonsai & very popular in Japan. Compared to Japanese, the Chinese way of styling a formal upright differs, in that they make the branches very short &compact. Some important requirement for this style is that:  The trunk should be perfectly straight, tapering naturally and entry from base to apex.  The branches must be well balanced in all direction, with the first, second and third branches being longer & stronger, while branches at the upper portion become smaller and shorter. The lowest branches should be one-third of the total height of the tree and it should be the longest one.  The plant must have good, strong root age with a gradual spread all around the base.  A tapering apex must possess tiny, twiggy structure so as to form a pointed crown or a self-rounded crown. Recommended Species: Larches, Junipers, Pines & Spruces are all suitable species. Maples can also be used, but are not as easy to train into such a conformist style. Above all, fruiting or naturally informal trees are not suitable for formal upright. 2. Informal Upright Style (Meyogi in Japanese): This style has a free with a curving trunk bending in several direction, with good primary branches on the outside of the curves and twisted but the tree still maintains a graceful and elegant shape which is pleasing ti the eye. Some important features for this style is that:  Good root age system, which gives a feeling of great stability.  Some trees have trunk line with nature curve near the base. By utilizing this natural curve, we can few more curves by wiring and thus make the trunk more interesting.  These should be good primary branches growing on the outer side of the curves or bends but never on the inner side.  The apes in this style should be perpendicular to the center of the trunk at the base. Recommended Species: Most species of plant are suitable for this style, mainly the Japanese Maple, Trident Maples, Beech, Practically in all conifers and other ornamental trees such as the Crab Apple, Cotoneaster, and Pomegranate.
